Tony Duarte, B.A., J.D.

Tony Duarte is the originating author (and currently co-author) of the legal text CANADIAN FILM & TELEVISION BUSINESS & LEGAL PRACTICE, published by Thomson Reuters.

 

Mr. Duarte has also been an Adjunct Professor at Osgoode Hall Law School, where he taught the Entertainment and Sports Law course for 14 years.  

 

Mr. Duarte is a graduate of Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto and also holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and Business Administration.  He articled with the legal department of Telefilm Canada and with Strathy, Archibald and Seagram (now part of the Gowlings firm).  In 1986 he joined Allegro Films Inc., then one of Canada's most active feature film production companies, and served as its Vice-President of Business and Legal Affairs and founding President of its domestic theatrical distribution subsidiary.  In 1990 Mr. Duarte became Legal Counsel to The Ontario Film Development Corporation (now called the Ontario Creates). 

 

Since 1992 Mr. Duarte has been in private legal practice in entertainment law.  He represents producers, institutional investors, distributors, writers and others in the film and television industry. He has been legal counsel to the producers of numerous motion pictures and television productions including IN DARKNESS (the Academy Awards Best Foreign Picture Nominee in 2011), HOME AGAIN, I’M YOURS, OLIVER SHERMAN, DIAMONDS, GUNS, HOW SHE MOVE, ALL HAT, COMEBACK SEASON, MONKEY WARFARE, BEOWULF & GRENDEL, LIE WITH ME, TOUCH OF PINK, ONE DEAD INDIAN, WHEN NIGHT IS FALLING, DEAD AVIATORS, DOG PARK, THE RED VIOLIN, THE PERFECT SON, TWITCH CITY, NEW WATERFORD GIRL, LOVE COME DOWN, BETWEEN STRANGERS, and LIVES OF THE SAINTS.
